Anti-Racist Coalition calls on Board of Review panel to extend deadline for submissions
TORONTO, ON – March 27, 2017 – A citizen’s group is rallying people to speak out against a neo-Nazi hate sheet that wants to force Canada Post to deliver it door to door.
In response to a Board of Review panel request for submissions to review Minister Judy Foote’s prohibitory order against Your Ward News – a neo-Nazi rag delivered in the Greater Toronto Area – Standing Together Against Mailing Prejudice (STAMP) is calling on area residents to provide submissions before March 31, 2017, which is just a few days from now.
“It is incredibly important for community members to be heard by the Board of Review panel, Unfortunately, we only have a short amount of time to deliver submissions before the imposed March 31st deadline,” said Lisa Kinsella, managing partner of the Daisy Group and one of the founding members of STAMP. “The Board only provided little more than a week to hear from citizens and the only notice came in the form of a tiny, hard to find advertisement. This is unacceptable and we demand more time. We’re talking about the dissemination of racism in our communities – certainly, the panel can ensure citizens have a proper opportunity to express their concerns.”
“For too long, this racist, homophobic, misogynistic, and anti-Semitic rag has been regularly delivered to as many as 300,000 homes in Toronto by Canada Post,” continued Kinsella. “Minister Foote did the right thing when she issued a prohibitory order last year. Now, Your Ward News’ owner and editor have hired a high-priced lawyer to fight her decision.”
STAMP member Richard Warman, a leading human rights lawyer and anti-racism activist said, “It’s been 35 years since the minister responsible last used a prohibition order to revoke the mailing privileges of Holocaust denier, Ernst Zundel. The section is rarely used, and rightly so, in the balancing of freedom of expression against Canada’s domestic and international legal obligations to outlaw hate propaganda.”
“Your Ward News is edited by James Sears, who has in the past pleaded guilty to sexual assault, and lost his licence to practice medicine,” said Kinsella. “He is an unabashed Hitler enthusiast who has called the gas chambers at Auschwitz a ‘lie.’ Let’s be clear: hate propaganda is not free speech.”
“The hate propaganda in Your Ward News is exactly the kind of material that should be subject to a prohibition order as an attack on the community as a whole,” said Warman. “Those responsible can’t corrupt an arm of the government to do their dirty work for them.”
If you are interested in keeping hate out of our communities, please write to the Board of Review. Your notification should include why you are a “person who has an interest in the matter” and a maximum one page summary of the submissions you wish to make to the Board. Your request may be emailed to: Contact@BoardOfReview.ca before March 31, 2017. Further information on this issue and the Board of Review panel can be found on STAMP’s website: StampOutHate.ca.
